What is the difference between a domain name, hosting, and DNS?

These three elements are linked, but they do not have the same role.

  • The domain name is the address visitors type, for example yoursite.nc.
  • Hosting is the space where the website, files, databases, and sometimes email are stored.
  • DNS tells the domain which hosting or service it should point to.

A domain can therefore exist without a visible website if its DNS does not yet point to active hosting.
